An Eternal Perspective

Be wise in your responses to others so that you represent Me well. I love you and I long for your success. If you could see from My view, you would always know how to respond. Therefore, ask Me and I will guide you in the right way. Success is not measured with an earthly ruler but a heavenly one. Know the time to speak and the time to be silent. Earth is full of traps and holes and Satan is waiting to trip you up. Seek the good way always. The right way. The honest and humble way. Love your neighbor, good and bad. Be the one who always shows integrity. Show others the way. My way. Do this consciously and lovingly. Focus on eternal purposes. Life on earth and the things of earth are short-lived. Even the seemingly good and tempting things. Remember what matters and spend your time there. One day at a time, become more like Me, Your Creator. The bar is high. Reach for it.

Become more like God Himself? Really? Is this even possible? Yes, in fact it is possible and not only possible, but life-giving. It’s true, the bar is high, in fact, very high. But it’s also a bar that is completely accessible and attainable… to EVERYONE. First, and most importantly, there’s this: Eternal Life – Jesus accomplished all that is needed for us to spend eternity in paradise in the presence of God when He (Jesus) paid the penalty for our sins on the cross and then rose again three days later conquering death for good. All we need to do is believe in Him and accept His free gift of eternal “life”. Period. This stands on its own.

Second, but also very important, there is this: living today with eternity in mind – living today for the things that matter most, the things that impact us today and continue into eternity: love, joy, wisdom, patience, kindness, generosity, gentleness, peace, self-control, etc. In other words, the things that are contrary to those that do not continue into eternity: fame, power, money, greed, self-indulgence, etc.

Finally, there is this amazing bonus: when we accept Jesus into our lives, we also receive the gift of the Holy Spirit working in us to mold us into the image of God every day we walk on this earth… someone who experiences love, joy, wisdom, patience, peace, etc. on a regular basis. We, of course, need to work with the Holy Spirit through our desire and obedience to His promptings, but it is the Holy Spirit Himself who works growth in us, who gives us the ‘power’ to change and become more like our Creator, the wisest and most loving One who ever existed. So yes, reach for the bar – reach for Jesus… the accessible high bar that is life-giving, today and into eternity.

I love this message I found on a daily Christian calendar:

To make the most of your time on earth, you must maintain an eternal perspective… Paul said, “We fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV). So much of what we waste our energy on will not matter even a year from now, much less for eternity. Don’t trade your life for temporary things.

Temporary things simply mean they won’t last beyond our lifetime on this earth. They seem important today but, in the view of eternity, they are miniscule. Inconsequential. Not only that, but many of the things we strive for today (promotion, material possessions, the best entertainment and vacations, popularity [including social media ‘likes’], having our say, being right, etc.) can be, and often are, a detriment to the things that truly matter: love and respect for others, listening (I mean truly listening), unity, peace, and true joy, (which is not the same as sporadic happiness), not to mention the most important loss which is an eternal void within our soul. Yes, eternal. We are all appointed to physically die once but our souls will live on into eternity. We will either live eternity in paradise (yes, paradise) with God or we will live eternity alone, separated from God. I can’t stress enough the importance of this distinction.

We have two choices: 1) Live for, focus on, and invest in the here and now, which yields temporary benefits but long-term anguish and regret or 2) Live for, focus on, and invest in eternity which has both temporary and long term (eternal) benefits and no regret. Now, just for a moment, close your eyes and imagine eternity. Really imagine it. It’s FOREVER. Not 80 to 100 years but hundreds upon hundreds upon thousands upon millions of years and when that time is up, eternity will still go on. Do you really want to trade eternity in paradise for 80 to 100 years of ignoring the God who created you and the beautiful purpose He has for your life to live your own way chasing after… (you fill in the blank)? I don’t.

“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. (Ecclesiastes 1:14 NIV)

Consider this scripture as one way to think eternally (loving others the way God loves us, for God loves even those who reject Him):

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:43-48 NIV)

The Better You is Calling – Part I

I love you. You are My child and I adore you. Before anything, always remember this. I adore you. Your failures and weaknesses are not too much for Me to handle. They are just that – weaknesses that can be conquered. We can and will conquer them together. Be willing to pray, focus, and do the work. Change takes work. Change takes time. But it is time well spent for the outcome, the end result will be beautiful. You, a child of God, of Me, are beautiful. But this beauty will multiply with these changes. With each change or move closer to Me and My will for your life. Some days the effort will need to be strong, other days, it will seem easy. Each situation you face will exhibit its own challenge that you will need to conquer. On the difficult days, pray more frequently, more fervently. Do not attempt to do any of this without Me. My strength will be your reward and your sustenance. My strength is a requirement for your success. So, ask for it often and do not work at this alone. My Spirit will change you as you have requested. I promised the Spirit’s help long ago through My Son, Jesus Christ as He left this place we call earth. Therefore, know the strength that is available to you. Use the Tool of the Holy Spirit to move you forward in your journey toward a character more like Jesus. This is your rebirth to a new life on earth. The slate is clean. Do not look back but move forward in My Grace and love others abundantly as I love you. You will feel the difference. It will be unmistakable. You will know I am working in and through you with My love, a love deeper and more extravagant than you can imagine in your earthly mind. But you will see and feel it and you will be amazed at the intensity of My Grace in your life and in the lives of others. A Grace humans can rarely comprehend. I offer it to you and to others freely. Accept it and pass it along lovingly to those around you. Let love, My love, conquer all. Let My love penetrate your very being, the essence of your mind and soul. I give to you as you ask and as you believe you will receive. I cannot force this love upon you. Your heart must be fully open, and it must be your true desire to receive it. Then you will see yourself transformed into a person of essential love, a person who will emanate My love and touch others with it. The beauty will be unmistakable. Seek this love, My love, daily and you will find that it is yours forevermore. I love you so very dearly. Rest now and be at peace with all. Be at peace within.

The other night, while I was studying the Word of God with three other women who seek to know and obey God more deeply, I was reminded of the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers… a gift we sometimes (or often) forget to remember.

Anyone who has ever tried to change what they perceive to be a shortcoming in themselves knows how hard this change can be. But what if I told you that God loves you anyway? No matter how good you perceive yourself to be, you can’t earn His love, and no matter how bad you perceive yourself to be, you can’t cause Him to stop loving you. God is love. Period. Isn’t that freeing?

Knowing that our goodness or badness doesn’t affect our acceptance by God is, indeed, freeing. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have areas in which to grow and it doesn’t mean that growth can’t benefit our walk with God and others. Growth is, in fact, good. But, on our own, it’s sure not easy.

God promised never to leave us or forsake us. In fact, He sent us a Helper, His Spirit, the Holy Spirit to live in our hearts and guide us in life. The problem is we often ignore this precious gift and choose, instead, to rely on our less qualified selves for guidance. When we rely solely on ourselves instead of on the power of the Holy Spirit, we are incomplete, weak even, in our power, strength, knowledge, sight, love, forgiveness…  you get the picture. The power of God’s Spirit in our lives is stronger than we realize, and it can propel us forward in ways we never thought possible. It all starts with a genuine act of humility followed by a simple request: “Lord, I know I can’t do this without You. Please help me become a better listener, friend, spouse… fill in the blank.”  Friend, I promise you, God loves to hear this prayer.

This is certainly not a promise of “overnight” change, although that can happen. Sanctification is a process that happens gradually over time… the process of being freed from sin… the process of maturing into a better person… the process of becoming more like Jesus. There’s no doubt that real and lasting change takes time and effort on our part, but the difference between change with God and change without God is drastic. This is because God is all knowing, all seeing, and all powerful. Because He sees and knows everything, God knows what is best for us and He is willing to use His power to bless us in ways we never imagined… if we will only accept Him and ask Him to. Indeed, the power of God’s Spirit to yield positive change is limitless and can lead to a life of joy anyone should desire. I pray the message at the top of this post and the divinely breathed scripture below will move you to seek God’s power in your life leading to blessings beyond measure.

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.  I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:14-19 NIV)

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:15-17 ESV)

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-25 ESV)

Who Do You Love?

Beware of evil lurking at your door. Do not allow it in. Pray and be wise. Send evil away. Behave maturely and humbly. Do not allow evil any foothold. Love at all times. Force Satan to leave. Satan does not stay where he does not have success. Follow My lead and My guidance. Respond like Jesus and adhere to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Love at all times. Focus on this love with those who are hard to love. This is where your actions make the biggest difference, the largest impact. Loving the unlovely, loving the arrogant, loving the selfish. This is what I do, and I call you to love like Me. Love in action and word and see your joy multiply. See relationships flourish. See people change. Love is a miracle. Taste and see.

Recently, while reading over my ‘middle of the night’ messages, I was reminded there are more on ‘love’ than any other topic.  Hmm.  One could easily conclude I’m a cold person if I needed that many reminders to be more loving.  And that’s a fair conclusion.  I’ve already stated in a prior post that I felt the messages were for me.  But here’s the thing – in the Bible, love is the greatest commandment, first to love God and then to love our neighbors as ourselves.  If we are honest (and I hope we can be), we all have certain personalities that we struggle to love.  And I am no different.   

As far back as I can remember, I have struggled with arrogant personalities.  I’m not talking about someone who is occasionally arrogant.  That would be all of us (and I’m not condoning it).  I am talking about someone who is consistently arrogant, someone who thinks themselves better than most, someone who consistently brags or feels the need to show how great they are.  I also struggle greatly with self-centered personalities.  Not those who are occasionally self-centered.  Again, that would be all of us.  I am talking about those who are blatantly selfish and inconsiderate of others on a consistent basis.  Escaping the presence of arrogant and selfish personalities is usually something I want to accomplish as quickly as possible.  To me, these personalities are unlovely.  And I don’t say this easily.  My pride wants to tell you that I am a super loving person all the time, that I’ve learned this lesson well, and those multiple ‘love’ messages are part of my past.  But it would be a lie.  And I suspect I am not alone. 

What types of personalities do you find unlovely?  I’m talking about personalities that may or may not be sinful.  In some case, they are just ‘different’. I’m not asking you to write a personal blog about it; just to admit it to yourself so you can get the most out of this personal blog.  Sound fair?  Ok, I’ll give you a minute to reflect…

Truth is, whether we admit it or not, we all have personalities that rub us the wrong way or cause our blood pressure to rise.  And here’s another truth – you may be an unlovely personality to someone.  The day God opened my eyes to see this was the day I was truly humbled.  I am someone’s unlovely or difficult person.

Across the face of this earth are many different personalities, cultures, and belief systems spanning many different experiences.  We are all different and it is quite common for us humans to congregate toward those who are most like us and to move away from those who are different.  We don’t like different.  We don’t understand different.  And herein lies the problem.

God is love.  He is not partly love or sometimes love.  God is 100% love 100% of the time.  When Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He didn’t die for some personalities; He died out of pure love for all personalities, all cultures, and all skin colors.  The love of Christ is inclusive, not selective.  If we want to be more like Jesus, then we need to work on loving all personalities, all people, all the time.  And for us humans, this is not easy. 

I don’t need to go into detail about what is happening in our society today.  We all see the racial and political tensions.  And for African Americans, this is more than a today problem.  This is both a historical and present-day problem.  As Janetta Oni in a Summit Church interview said, “This is a ‘lived experience’ problem.”  And all African Americans know that it will be a future problem without real and dramatic change.  And that change needs to start with our mindset.  We need to stop and realize that different doesn’t mean ‘less than equal’ or unlovely. 

We all judge our neighbors in some form or fashion, and we all need to repent of our human bias.  We need to address sin head-on starting with our own.  For me, and for all of us, repentance must come first.  I need to recognize that I am not loving like Jesus.  Without that recognition, nothing else can happen.  Following repentance, I need to make the effort to understand those who rub me the wrong way.  Perhaps if I understood their background and history, I would see them differently.  I might even understand the reason for their arrogance or selfishness.  Perhaps if I came to know them, we might become friends.  This takes both time and intentionality and I need to be willing to invest the effort.  Otherwise, I remain separated from those who rub me the wrong way… and separation is not of God.      

Likewise, for racial issues.  For us to correct our sin of judgment, bias, hate, complacency, or indifference (yes, this too is sin), we need to be intentional about addressing it.  First, are we even aware of the problem?  By now, I hope most of us are.  Second, does our awareness come with a genuine understanding of the problem?  If not, we need to seek education on this topic.  I believe with a true understanding of this issue, we will be spurred to act.  This action may be speaking up against a racial joke, defending our multi-cultural friends and neighbors against racial attacks, or participating in awareness and education campaigns.  Some of us may even have the influence to propel political and legal change that will help shape a diverse, unified, and equal future.  At the very least, we need to teach our children about the equality of all human life… that racial bias will not be tolerated.  

I want to reiterate the reason for these very real, historical and current day issues and that reason is recurring and perpetual sin – loving self more than others… ignoring the issue of bias in our own hearts, sweeping racial tensions under the carpet, looking the other way, etc.  If you believe you are an innocent bystander in our world’s sin issue, I ask you to reconsider your position.  Who do you see as unlovely?  Who do you disregard?  What glaring sin have you been indifferent to?  Consider this: even though you may be unlovely to someone, you are not unlovely to God.  And those you see as unlovely are also not unlovely to God.  He loves us despite our imperfections, and He is asking us to love others despite theirs.  God also loves our differences and He sees them as beautiful!  Understanding the depth of God’s love and forgiveness in our own lives should spur us on to be more patient and loving with the personality and physical differences of others.  Intentionally working to instill love and understanding in our hearts will be the very catalyst to change.  Love is powerful.  To choose not to love is to give evil a foothold.  And make no mistake, friend, we have given evil a foothold.  With each choice not to love, sin is perpetuated.  If God is love (and He is), then love is stronger than evil.  With a genuine desire on our part, God can change our hearts and love can be increased in a world that so desperately needs it. 

I am praying for genuine love in my own heart for all people and I am praying for love in your heart as well.  Let us seek repentance and unification together!

Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39 NIV)

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 NIV)
